FAQ

Absolutely. Camp Burnout has also been specifically developed for people suffering from chronic stress. English really only has the term ‘burnout’, with chronic stress being the best term for the Dutch ‘overspanning’, though it falls short. That’s why the name Camp Burnout was chosen. Most importantly, chronic stress and burnout are both part of the same ‘condition’. It’s like having light flu (chronic stress) and heavy flu (burnout).

Camp Burnout is an initiative by Rik Eysink Smeets – international strategy consultant – who got a burnout in 2019 and was surprised by the serious lack of professional guidance and clarity about what you have to do to recover. As a result, he set himself a simple mission: to make the best recovery program for chronic stress and burnout possible.

Camp Burnout has been put together based on lessons and techniques from ex-patients. Effective and proven techniques that others have applied to get themselves out of chronic stress/burnout. These lessons have been checked and founded on current psychological theories. The program therefore includes lessons on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and insights and exercises from the theory of mindfulness.

Moreover, the complete program has been checked and validated by a prominent psychiatrist and academic.

But don’t expect ‘the same’ from Camp Burnout as what you can read in innumerable books on the matter or the same as a psychologist’s or coach’s program. Camp Burnout has been built up around an incredibly clear step-by-step plan. You won’t find any noncommittal tips like ‘go for a walk in nature’ or ‘drink a cup of mint tea’ here. No. We believe that chronic stress/burnout is a medical condition – just like a broken leg, for example – which therefore also calls for an established treatment plan. Or put in another way, a clear, step-by-step plan with things that you have to do in order to get better.

In other words, if you believe that recovery has to remain a vague, personal journey, then this is probably not the program for you. But if you just want to know what you have to DO to get better, start your recovery at Camp Burnout.

If you feel more down than normal, experience more anxiety or feelings of panic than normal, and feel that you have less control over your life and notice that things are ‘too much’ for you (because they otherwise lead to anxiety), there’s a high chance that you are suffering from chronic stress or burnout.

Other symptoms include:

  • Feeling down or depressed
  • Getting stressed and anxious more quickly
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Finding that things quickly get ‘too much’
  • Having a pessimistic outlook on work and life
  • Having no enjoyment in (work) tasks, finding everything a checkbox on a ‘to-do’ list
  • Suffering from physical pains or problems
  • Suffering from headaches, stomachaches or bowel problems
  • Neglecting personal needs
  • Increased escapist activities (such as alcohol and drugs)
  • A desire to push ‘pause’
  • Feeling empty and missing feelings of satisfaction
  • Making small problems big
  • Social withdrawal

Of course, this is not an official diagnosis but these things can all be a serious indication. Always get a diagnosis from a doctor or psychologist.

The only thing your need in order to use Camp Burnout is a smartphone with an internet connection. You can follow the complete program on your phone. Most lessons are audio or video lessons, so go and get comfortable, take a seat or lie down, and get to work on your recovery.

At the moment, Camp Burnout costs $100,-. For this, you get a year’s access to the whole program.

When you’ve paid, you get a year’s access to the whole program, which you can do at your own pace. All lessons are available from the beginning, so you’re free to do each lesson and exercise when you want.

Not at the moment. The Dutch government recently decided that chronic stress/burnout should fall under a different medical category, meaning that chronic stress/burnout could no longer be reimbursed (so also not from psychological assistance).

A psychologist and Camp Burnout do two different things. Camp Burnout is a step-by-step recovery program where you get all sorts of lessons and exercises to help you recover along the way. A psychologist, however, is useful to consult periodically about any personal issues that you’ve come across during your recovery. You can therefore use both alongside each other very well. It’s also important to remember that only a doctor or certified psychologist can establish your chronic stress or burnout diagnosis as well as rule out any other potential underlying conditions before you start the recovery process for chronic stress or burnout. We therefore always strongly advise you to get a diagnosis from a medical specialist.

No. Camp Burnout is an online recovery program that you can do with your smartphone.
